We talk a lot about the three trimesters of pregnancy. Much less about what comes immediately afterwards. Yet the first weeks after giving birth are a chapter of their own: the fourth trimester. It’s an intense period of transition, when everything changes again — your body, routines, sleep, emotions and everyday life.
What is the fourth trimester?
The fourth trimester refers to the first weeks following birth.
After nine months of pregnancy, your body doesn’t simply return to its previous state overnight. It continues to evolve while an entirely new rhythm of life begins.
It’s also a time of adjustment: getting to know your baby, finding new routines, recovering, perhaps breastfeeding, and simply finding your feet in this new chapter.
A body that continues to change
During pregnancy, watching your body change feels completely natural. After giving birth, expectations can suddenly become very different.
Yet your belly doesn’t disappear immediately and your silhouette can continue to evolve over the weeks and months that follow.
There is no universal timeline and no particular shape you need to return to by a certain date. Every woman experiences postpartum differently.
Clothes can accompany this transition too.
That’s one of the reasons we design maternity clothes at Jolibump to be worn far beyond nine months.
Comfort takes on a new meaning
During these first weeks, what you look for in your clothes may change too.
Soft fabrics, flexible waistbands, comfortable silhouettes and easy-to-wear pieces often become everyday essentials.
A pair of maternity leggings with soft knitwear, maternity jeans without an over-the-bump panel paired with an oversized shirt, or an easy dress can help you feel dressed while still giving your body freedom.
What if you’re breastfeeding?
Breastfeeding can also temporarily change the way you think about getting dressed.
But there’s no need to replace everything you own.
A few nursing essentials, combined with shirts, cardigans and T-shirts already in your wardrobe, can make everyday dressing easier.
Our ecru seamless organic cotton nursing bra, for example, is designed to fit easily into an everyday wardrobe.
Between maternity clothes and your “old” wardrobe
The fourth trimester also reveals a strange divide in our wardrobes.
On one side, maternity clothes. On the other, everything we wore before pregnancy.
But between the two is a period when the body is still evolving.
What if our clothes simply evolved with it?
That’s one of the ideas behind Jolibump pieces.
Our Light Blue Wide Leg maternity jeans, navy blue flare maternity leggings and Matéo merino wool cardigan are designed to find their place in your wardrobe during pregnancy and beyond.
Give yourself time
The fourth trimester is a transition.
There is no rush to find your old routine, habits or wardrobe again.
Sometimes feeling more like yourself starts with something very simple: going for a walk, taking a little time for yourself or putting on an outfit that makes you feel good.
After nine months of accompanying a changing body, it deserves just as much consideration in the months that follow.
